2019 budget: House of Reps urge federal government to include Lokoja-Okene-Auchi Road
The
House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to make provision for
the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Lokoja-Okene-Auchi Road.
The
call was made at the plenary on Wednesday after the House adopted a motion
moved by Mr Yusuf Tijani, entitled, ‘Urgent Need to Rehabilitate the
Lokoja-Okene-Auchi Road.’
Granting
prayers of the motion, the lawmakers unanimously resolved to urge the Federal
Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to “include the rehabilitation of the road
in the 2019 budget proposal.

They
also mandated the Committee on Works to ensure compliance.
Moving
the motion, Tijani said, “The Lokoja-Okene-Auchi road is the major link between
the Northern and Southern parts of Nigeria, connecting seven states in the
country, and is also the gateway to the Ajaokuta Steel Company as well as the
Itakpe Iron Ore Mining Company of Nigeria.
“The
Road has been left to deteriorate for a long time without any form of
maintenance or rehabilitation. For over a decade, the road had always been
listed among the capital projects in the national budgets but has never
received significant attention from successive governments.”
The
lawmaker cited the instances of how Abuja and Lagos bound travellers spent
about three days on the road, occasioned by traffic gridlock as all the
alternative routes were congested and completely blocked.
“The
House is desirous of the need to ensure that the vital link road is
rehabilitated to ease the sufferings of commuters,” he stated.
